Gordian III, 238-244. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 30 mm, 16.33 g, 12 h), Rome, 239. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III to right, seen from behind. Rev. VIRTVS AVG / S - C Mars standing front, head to left, holding branch in his right hand and inverted spear in his left; to left, shield set on ground. Cohen 384. Mazzini pl. XCII, 384 (this coin). Michaux 163. RIC 273a. Rare and with a beautiful brown patina. Minor doubling and with a few light deposits, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the collection of Kurt Zimmermann (* 1937) of Winterthur, long-serving numismatist at Schweizerische Kreditanstalt and Leu Numismatik, privately acquired from Schweizerische Kreditanstalt in November 1973, reportedly previously acquired from Leu, and from the collection of Ing.
